Although there are many myths and legends about the aquamarine stone, the Greeks and Romans viewed it as “the sailor's gem” and relied on it to ensure their safe passage across stormy seas.
For centuries, aquamarine has been thought to bring youth and health. It's the colour of water and the sky and is said to represent eternal life and energy. Aquamarine means ‘seawater’ and is found in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Madagascar and the USA. The pale blue, transparent crystal is a member of the Beryl family. Its colour, sometimes bluish green, is caused by iron oxides within the chemical makeup of the stone.
Aqua chalcedony is associated with emotional balance and tranquility. It is also said to promote eloquence so is often called the 'speaker's stone'.
Chalcedony was used to create tools by the Babylonians and was found in ancient Afghan jewellery.
Romans believed it encouraged eloquence in speech and protected against evil.
The name comes from the ancient Byzantine city of Chalcedon (or Kalkedon), now Kadıköy, Turkey.
Aqua chalcedony is a popular modern, affordable alternative for jewellery, often associated with March birthstones due to its calming colour.
